I used this ELECROW 1.54 inch E-Ink display for a weather readout on my desk, and it works great! It took me about 20 minutes to get going with the GxEPD2 library, and it barely uses any power, which is exactly what I wanted for something that sits there all day.
What I liked
The setup was the best part for me. With the GxEPD2 library I had the weather showing up in about 20 minutes, so I didn’t have to fight with the display to get something useful on it. A full refresh takes a couple seconds, which is fine for a weather readout since the information only changes now and then.
I also really like how little power it uses. E-paper only needs power when the image changes, so it suits small projects where you want information visible without a screen glowing on your desk.
What could be better
The main downside is that it’s very small. At 1.54 inches, it works best for a few short pieces of information rather than a busy dashboard. I’d also be careful with the wires. A bare display like this is easy to stress if you’re moving it around while wiring it up, so I’d take your time with the connections.
Who it’s for
I think this is better suited for someone comfortable with a bit of wiring and a microcontroller project rather than someone looking for a ready-made desk gadget. Before buying any E-Ink panel, check that your library supports the specific display and that your board can talk to it. Also keep in mind that this one is black and white only, and the slow refresh is normal for e-paper, so it isn’t meant for video or animation. For a weather readout, a clock, or a small status display, though, it’s a great little option.
Verdict
I gave it 5 out of 5. It was quick to set up, it sips power, and it did the job I bought it for. Just be gentle with the wires and expect a small screen.
